The Great Barrier Reef

Over 900 islands and 2600 kilometers make up the Great Barrier Reef, and is situated in the Coral Sea, it is the worlds biggest reef, although technically, it is actually made up of over 2900 smaller reefs, and is visible from outer space. The Aboriginal people of Australia, have long tied the Great Barrier Reef to their spiritualist beliefs, and now, although a great deal of the reef is protected to limit the amount of human damage done to it every year, the Great Barrier Reef brings in over one billion dollars worth of tourism every year.

For many people, visiting the Great Barrier Reef is a once in a life time opportunity, and it is, it most definitely is. Once you are underwater on the reef, it is a completely different world, whether you are just snorkeling above it or have hired scuba equipment and are diving down for a closer look, it is a surreal experience. There are many different types of trips available to the Great Barrier Reef.

Boat Trips

Many boat companies will offer trips on a glass bottomed boat, this is an ideal way for the children to see to the reef, sitting comfortably on benches and not getting to wet. There are two types of glass bottomed boats that you can use, one is a flat glass bottomed boat, where the bottom of the boat is made of glass, and the other is where you sit inside the boat, down by the keel, and you look through portholes.

Air Views

Parascending is a fun way to see the reef, although the speed boats cannot get to close for fear of damaging the reef. Or you could arrange a private plane charter which will fly you and your family or guests over the reef several times.

Snorkeling

Boat trips will allow you to jump overboard and swim around the area of the boat. The trip organisers will provide you with all the snorkeling equipment needed, and will also provide all the drinks and an on board BBQ, included in the cost.

Scuba Diving

Other day trips can offer you scuba diving experiences over the Great Barrier Reef, some will offer this only for Padi Registered divers, whilst others will give you a simple lesson before taking you out for your first proper dive.

Brisbane has so much more to offer than just the Great Barrier Reef, the perfect beaches offer an array of water sports from jet ski hire, skiing, to banana boat rides for the kids. Extreme Sports are a must for most Australians, you can have a bungee jump from a bridge or crane, or even parachute jumps over Brisbane, what ever your extreme sport, you will find it has a home in Brisbane.

Please Note. When visiting one of the seven wonders of the world, the Great Barrier Reef, please respect the local laws regarding touching or stealing coral or anything from the area. You are not allowed to take coral out of the country and will be stopped at customs, even if you have bought it from an illegal street vendor, you will be held responsible.
