Important Paperwork for Spain

Before you leave your country to travel abroad, you should photocopy your passport, driving license, ( and visa's if required ) even your E112, or any other important paper work. Then, should you be robbed or lose the original, at least you have a copy to show the police instantly, which will help speed things up. A photocopy is cheap, you may not need it, but in case something happens, it could save you lots of time and hassle because of the language barrier. In Spain you must carry your driving license and passport with you when you drive. Just in case, here is the phone number of the British Embassy, if anything happens, call them, they will be able to help without a language problem: 917 146 300. For out of normal hour emergencies it is: 917 146 400. With this one number, they can direct you to other services if required.

Driving Laws in Spain

When you hire out your car, please check that there are two roadside warning triangles, a luminous vest for each passenger and a spare set of bulbs in the boot, the Spanish law states that these items must be in a car at all times. The hire company will supply them. In case of any accident with another vehicle, do not let them drive off without giving you all their details, and see their driving license to ensure that they are correct. Your insurance does not cover you for being towed away for illegal parking, you would have to pay for towing charges, storage and administration. On the spot fines are issued for not stopping at a stop sign, speeding, and other minor infractions, if you do not have the money on you, they may escort you to a bank machine to draw out cash. If you cannot pay, they may take the car from you, in which case you will be charged again for towing. If you think you can getaway with a bit of drink driving, forget it, unless you want to be banned all over Europe including England, fined 1200 euros, and possibly spend a little time in a Spanish prison. It is not worth it, so do not do it. The police in Spain are very helpful, child friendly, and extremely nice, be nice back, you will get on a lot better. Drive careful and don't forget, in Spain, they drive on the right hand side.
