Caring For Baby Rabbits

How to care for rabbits is something which every budding child pet owner must know. Bunny rabbits are by far one of the most popular pets for children, which require little attention compared to a cat or dog. A simple cheap rabbit hutch, some food and possibly a rabbit run is adequate for most types of rabbits. Rabbits can be trained by their owner if the rabbit has been acquired whilst he or she was young.

Sometimes referred to as an eating and pooing machine, rabbits can show affection to their owners, but prefer to be left alone to do their own thing. Children love rabbits, but many die within a few days of them being bought or given as a gift. This can cause heartache for the child, even though it is obviously worse for the rabbit.

A rabbits heart is weak, and the general upset of moving homes and being separated from their own families can have a detrimental effect. This along with being man handled roughly by an over excited child can be to much for the young rabbit, who may die within two days.

Choosing The Right Rabbit

Caring for a rabbit is easier if the right rabbit was chosen in the first place. Some young rabbits can be temperamental which can result in a bad tempered rabbit which does not want to be picked up, ever. These rabbits will bite, scratch and do anything to avoid being handled by a child. If choosing a rabbit, and initially it begins to bite or scratch, then do not choose it. Opt for one which seems more at peace when being picked up.

Although rabbits are cute cuddly and mainly friendly, some give vicious bites which hurt and can sting for days. This can usually deter the children from picking them up and looking after them. The pet then becomes left alone and the parents need to step in to tend the animal or arrange for it to be given away.

Wooden hutches are more natural but need upkeep if being kept outside, especially through the wetter months of the year. Creosote is the best protection but the rabbits will need to be kept away from the hutch for a couple of days until the smell has calmed down.

Great info for new rabbit or soon-to-be rabbit owners! Thanks for sharing this Hub! I loved the "eating and pooing machine" comment. I own a little Holland Lop mix and find that to be very true.
