Nearly every day when the beaches are cleaned, empty wallets and purses are found which thieves have been emptied the buried in the sand. Always keep your spot on the beach in sight, if possible when going swimming, have one person sit there with your belongings. When you arrive at the beach, the ideal two things to locate first are a toilet and a first aid centre, just in case. The beaches in Spain are cleaned and levelled daily, so there is usually no litter or broken glass around, but always be aware that no system is fool proof.
