Car hire insurance information
When you take out a car insurance policy from a hire company, nobody ever reads the fine print, after all it is insurance, yes? you are covered for anything, right? Think again. The insurance from the hire car company legalises you to drive on the roads in that country, if you are planning to cross a border at any stage, you need to tell the hire company this, or you may find that your insurance does not apply in case of accident. So if you hire a car in Spain, and decide to go into France for a day and the car is stolen, you may be liable to pay for the whole car. A case in Alicante where a couple hired a car for two weeks, they returned the car with one hub cap missing and were charged 75 euros for the replacement, just ask about excess charges. The insurance usually does not cover you if you have been in an accident whilst drink driving or have a heart condition that you did not declare when signing the contract. If you are banned in England, you are also banned from driving in Spain, if you get stopped by the police, they can and do check this, you do not want to end up in court whilst on your holiday. If you are stopped by the police, you must always have your passport and driving license with you. The insurance also does not cover any costs involved should you get the car towed away by police for illegal parking or not paying an on the spot fine, your car could be towed and you will be responsible for paying all towing, storage and administration costs. One of the main causes of small accidents, is that we sometimes forget which side of the road to be on and which way to go around a roundabout, so be careful.
