The Cobra Snake

Widely known around the world for being a very poisonous snake, the cobra has caused many fatalities in India through its bites, including unsuspecting tourists whist on vacation. The King Cobra can grow to five meters in length, and can raise its head nearly two meters off the ground.

The Cobra snake family, does not need to bite you to hurt you, it can spit venom through its fangs for a distance of over two meters and can blind its prey, as well as severely damaging human eyes, which can cause blindness if not washed out as soon as possible. There is anti-serum for bites from the cobra, if you can get it quick enough, the Cobra snake is poisonous and can kill a man with one bite. There are no records in India of the total number of deaths caused by this snake. People on vacation and holidays to India are usually warned about the lethal snakes in the holiday area.

This snake has several different names including a Carpet Viper, and these snakes have killed more men than any virtually other snake on the planet. Found mainly in all areas of India, these venomous snakes will make a "sizzling" noise before striking. They are nocturnal, which makes them even deadlier, and can be found inside tents and automobiles. Their toxin is hemotoxin, which will attack the central nervous system of anything bitten, usually paralyzing smaller prey. Their bite can kill a man, usually after internal bleeding, severe pain, and brain hemorrhage.

Many vacations to India have been ruined by this snake, and families have ben devastated.

Leopards

These absolutely beautiful animals roam wild in certain parts of India, although 98% now live on reservations. These big cats are very adept at hunting, and can be only a few feet away from a human, yet not be detected. They usually eat wild animals such as wilder-beast and gazelles, but have been known to attack dogs whilst walking out with their owners, but are usually nocturnal hunters. Some Leopards are classed as man killers, with attacks from Leopards at over fifty per year, with nearly 15% of them fatal.

The most famous Leopard in India, was called "Kahani man-eater", who was responsible for the killing of over 200 people.

Whilst on vacations or holidays to India, it may be advisable to stear clear of forested areas unless accompanied by a guide.

Crocodiles

Crocodiles in India are widespread, and can be found near water such as swamps lakes and rivers. Many reported attacks by crocodiles are usually when people have gone down to the river to fish or wash clothes, as the water front is their natural feeding ground. Some Indian crocodiles have been known to grow to 30 foot long, and will drag their prey alive, under the water, rolling around to weaken them, forcing the air out of their lungs, then will leave the body to rot for a while before they begin to eat it.

Spiders

There are many spiders in India, including Tarantulas and the Black Widow Spider, there are no reported incidents of fatalities from spider bites in recent years, but bites from the black widow spider can result in swollen arms and legs if not treated soon after the initial bite. If somebody has been bitten by a spider, and there is swelling away from the bite area, they may be allergic to spider bites and will need to be taken to hospital very quickly, as this can cause heart failure.

Thousands of people on vacation to India every year get bitten by spiders. Ensure that anti-histamines are readily available.

Tsetse Fly

The fat bodied Tsetse fly, killer of nealy half a million people in Africa every year, claimed its first fatality in 2007 in India. The disease this fly spreads is called the sleeping sickness, and attacks the central nervous system then the brain, making the bitten person very tired constantly. Death soon follows.

Inoculations are a must before anybody travels to India for the sleeping sickness and Malaria. Seek doctors advice before leaving for this country. Sleeping Sickness can be cured if you have been bitten, if you know what has bitten you and get to hospital before the disease spreads through your body.

India is a fantastic country and full of Eastern promise. Vacations and holidays to this corner of the world are amazing.

Yeah I understand that, and as I say, very well written stuff.

Just think maybe some of it sounds a little harsh, almost as if you're telling people to expect they will be bitten, but maybe that's just my interpretation.

Either way, good hubs :)

Hi Danny,

Thank you for adding the interesting bit on the comment. I admit that some of the poisonous and venomous hubs sound a bit scary. They are not meant to put people off of visiting these places, as I have already been to quite a lot of them and they are gorgeous. It is an indication of what possibly can, and does, happen. But that could be said of any place in the world.

I've read most of your 'Poisonous and Venemous Snakes and Spiders In...' hubs and I will admit that they are very entertaining, so credit to you for that!

However, I can't help but think you're trying to scare people just a little to much...whether or not on purpose, a lot of the pieces are written as if to warn people they will almost certainly be mauled by these creatures the second they arrive, when surely that is not the case?
