Renewable and Alternative Energy, wave power

By

Attempting to create power or energy from the oceans waves has been tried since 1890. So far, it has not been commercially economical due to the high expense of the machinery and the low generation of electricity. The energy from waves comes as the waves rise and fall. There are again different types of wave energy machine, most of them started to be developed in the 1970's when oil prices were peaking and alternatives for oil were being sought. But funding for most of the wave machine developers was shelved when oil prices began to tumble in the 1980's. One of the Wave Machines developed and is being used now is the Buoy type, this consists of a floating buoy which is 11m in diameter, and 44m tall 10m of each buoy is visible above the sea level.  It is anchored in about 200 feet of sea water. The energy generated comes from the hydraulic fluid inside the buoy, when the waves move the buoy, the hydraulic fluid moves a generator creating energy which is then turned to electricity.

Other Wave Tecnology

Many different types exist today, there are already virtually unheard of Wave Turbine Fields, where Wave Turbines, similar looking to Wind Turbines, are anchored to the ocean bed and produce power just by floating a few feet from the ocean floor. There are the snake like Wave Turbines we usually see, these spread across the top of the ocean and again create energy from the rise and fall of waves. Other types include the Anaconda Wave Energy Converter, the Pelamis, Aquabuoy, the wave dragon, the Sea Raser, there are hundreds of different companies designing wave power machines all around the world, but none have yet come up with a design which can be classed as economical. They all produce energy, but not enough, yet. They have designed machines that have to face into the waves, away from the waves, ones that take energy vertically from the sea and horizontally. Power created from the waves has not yet had any impact on the national grid, but they do use the power for desalinisation plants and similar coastal operations.

Energy Thought

There is a very great concern that the world will run out of natural resources such as fossil fuels, oil and natural gas in approximately 50 years. Most of the eco systems of energy such as wave, wind and solar power, have been in use since the Mayan civilisation was still alive, and are being used today, but only in a limited capacity. Many concerns have been said about nuclear power, which uses fossil fuels to give us our electricity, do we really need nuclear energy when we have so much energy around us naturally and constantly. At the moment, I personally would say yes, but only because our energy need is greater than what we can generate from the eco systems, but only because we do not have enough eco systems in place. In Spain, every newly built house must have a solar panel built in or on it, it is the law, the power generated from this solar panel is enough to supply the house with hot water forever, if they put up several more panels, that house would never have an electricity bill in its entire existence. In cooler climates, where the sun does not shine all day, use wind power combined with solar power. The initial cost of the outlay for these and other types of eco power systems may put you off of getting them, but the amount you would be saving easily outweighs this. Join with a neighbour, spread the cost, get local government grants, they are available in nearly every part of the world. I have four children, if my monthly electricity bill is over 50 euros, they will get nothing from me as a bonus, if the bill is less than 50 euros, the kids get the difference between the bill and the 50 euros, they now turn off lights when they leave the room, do not recharge their mobile games consoles constantly and turn their own televisions off at night and now have even been known to read a book instead.

Very great hub. I think the oceans have enough energy to supply a good percentage of the worlds energy needs. Congratulation on your 1000 views.
