History
In the year 1770, Captain James Cook landed in Botany Bay Australia and met with the aboriginal settlement of the Gweagal people. It was in the mountains above this bay, that the first settlement was meant to of been built, but the ground was found to be unsuitable for building the big stone buildings on, so they moved to the next sea inlet along the coast called Sydney Cove, which is where Sydney got its name. In 1788, the first ever British Penal Colony was established in Sydney. A smallpox outbreak killed approximately 1000 aboriginal people, causing violent conflicts between them and the British, which spread throughout the island wherever the British settled and took land. Sydney became the second biggest city after London in the entire British Empire, and this is the city where all the prisoners from England where sent.
Sydney became a city in 1842, and became the richest city in Australia during the first gold rush in 1852, and is the capital of New South Wales and is also the capital of Australia, and is situated on the Tasman Sea.
