Window Locks, Home Security, Security locks for windows
89Window locks to secure your windows from a possible burglary are now an important part of home security, and everyday life. But which ones are the best to suit you needs ? If you really want to know, the best person to ask is a thief, after all, who is better qualified to answer questions on which window locks will prevent him from opening a window. I have been speaking to Mr X, a former professional thief, who spent nearly ten years breaking into properties, who has now served time in a prison for the crimes he committed, and has now changed sides and is helping many hundreds of people better protect their homes.
Security locks for windows are designed and manufactured to prevent windows from being forced open, but not all of the live up to the standards they promise, some are so easy to open that a child can do it with one eye closed and two arms strapped behind his back. Mr X says that some complex security measures for window locks are useless or not worth the money, whilst some of the cheaper versions are actually better, but, the window locks are only as strong as the weakest link in any window.
Allen Key Window Locks
Any sales man can tell you how good a window lock is, he is a salesman, and he makes money from every sale. Mr X, is not making any money from this, but is sharing his invaluable experiences so as we can secure our homes and families better. Every window lock on the market will secure you window shut, they all do the same job, just with different fittings and catches.
There is no window lock in the world that can promise that a burglar will not get past it.
Consider what the thief needs to do, there are three options, breaking the glass, very noisy and attracts attention, take the glass out, this takes time, unless the window has been placed in position in using only quarter round pieces of wood which can easily be prised up, or prise open the window, this is the second most common way through a window, and can be done with a screwdriver or even a broken mop handle. This is where your window locks come in.
It makes a great deal of noise prying open a window if you have window locks fitted like the simple one in the photo above. If you fit one window lock to one side of the window, it it still easy to pry open the window from the other side, so fitting a window lock on each side of the window is better, and for long windows, put one in the middle as well. This can be a bit of a pain when you wish to open the window, but you will have made it ten times more burglar resistant.
Sliding Window Locks
Sliding window locks again come in different types, colours and even wood effect to blend in with wooden window frames, these are fitted very quickly with no drilling or mess, they simply attach to the lower sliding rail with the help of one screw, this will help prevent the burglar from forcing open the window. There are window locks available which comprise of a window bar, this is very good, it sits in the lower sliding rail and that is more or less it, with a metal rod in the sliding rail, the window will not open, the window cannot force itself against the metal rod.
Mr X says he did come across a few of these on sliding windows and he never bothered to attempt to get in that way, it was just to much hassle, which is good news for us. So, if there are sliding windows in the house, order some sliding window locks now, or a burglar, they are very cheap and will arrive in a few days, you have just deterred many would be burglars from entering that part of the house. Don't think that you will get round to it in a few days, it may be to late, do you really want your daughter or wife to wake up in the early hours of the morning with a masked man standing over them. By clicking to have a look at a lock, you are not obliged to buy one.
Vent Locks
These window locks allow you to leave a window open slightly to allow air into a room, but still have it locked. These are ideal for children's rooms and can serve a second purpose which is to prevent little children opening the window and climbing out, but will still let them have fresh air. They are also suitable for down stairs windows, burglaries can also happen whilst you are sitting in the front room watching the television, the burglar will creep in through the open back window, but not if you have a vent lock on it. Ideal also for the elderly who tend to forget that they have left a window open.
Window Lock with Alarm
These are ideal pre-warning Window Lock Alarms, they will work on sliding windows and patio doors. Once someone is trying to open the window, the alarm will sound alerting anybody in the house that someone is trying to get in. They work by a tiny vibration censor and once activated will emit a piercing shriek, which can be heard through doubled glazed windows which could shock the would be burglar into running away.
Window Security Film
There is a safety film which can be placed onto windows to prevent them from shattering. This is expensive stuff, and does make it more difficult for any would be thief to break the glass and gain entry. The glass does break, but it will remain in place, unless really forced.

Window locks are a great distraction that can cause the potential intruder to leave. It is also wise to install sun blocking window film to the windows which prevent the intruder from seeing where your locks are located and making it harder to enter the home by breaking the glass.
I like the idea of asking personally the thief, I guess you're right their the best person to consult regarding this one. Security locks for windows and doors are now necessary these days. This one was a big help.
