Dangerous Insects on your trip to Spain

Be aware that hot countries carry mad and angry insects that can severely interrupt your holiday. The good old mosquito, the female will bite you leaving you itchy and red and will hum around your head when you are trying to sleep. There are insect repellent sprays which are ok, they do help, a little, make sure you close all mosquito screens at the holiday house and always have some antihistamines at the ready. Little green flying bugs, I do not know the name of them, but they bite, they live in grass and if you walk through the grass they fly out and bite. They are very small, but it feels like their teeth are bigger than their heads. Again antihistamines help. Wasps, bees, and many other little insects are here to enjoy you as their holiday. Come to Spain prepared, when you find your holiday home, source out the local chemist just in case. If you leave a window open in your hire car, even only a little bit, expect some flies or mosquitoes to get in and hum around you whilst you drive.

Watch out, arachnids are here as well

You may come across snakes, scorpions, funnel web spiders, lizards and all sorts of other animals which can give a nasty sting or bite. Try and teach the children to steer clear of all things with legs and wings that they do not know. All these bites and stings are easily treatable. If someone gets bitten by a spider, take them to a red cross point, hospital or first aid centre immediately, an injection is usually administered then the patient is allowed home. If you come across what is called the processional caterpillar, between November and March, keep well away. They nest in fir trees in spider like cocoons, some the size of footballs, they are found in their hundreds and the hairs on their backs can cause skin irritations, spots, enflamed limbs etc. They are called processional caterpillars because the whole nest will walk in one line, nose to tail, it is an extraordinary sight, but don't get to close. Again, if you come into contact, go straight to hospital. Never leave your hire car window open.

Be warned and prepared
